PLOT: When the Earth Defense Squadron becomes incapacitated due to food poisoning Buck & Wilma fly to the farm planet to find out who's contaminating the food. They find an oblivious governor (Roddy McDowell) and a dark Messiah-type (Jack Palance) living in a desert fortress with plans to conquer Earth.
COMMENTARY: This double episode (running 97.5 minutes) is one of the better Buck Rogers segments. It's noticeably superior to the pilot because the story's more compelling and features a stellar guest cast led by Brianne Leary as Ryma, the curvy slave "girl" in an alluring outfit with go-go boots. The installment is perhaps best remembered for the sauna-like cell that Ryma & Wilma (and Buck) have to endure.
Other highlights include a friendly knock-down drag-out brouhaha between Buck and rival Major Duke Danton (David Groh); a quality survival-in-the-desert sequence; and guest Buster Crabbe, the original Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon, as a fighter pilot coming out of retirement to assist in the dire situation. Other notable guest stars include the striking Karen Carlson as Stella, Don Marshall (Land of the Giants) and Robert Dowdell.
For the record, Buck says "Funk & Wagnalls" not, um, never mind.
