One of the weakest episodes of the season
katierose29527 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This is really not one BTVS's best episodes. "Where the Wild Things Are" is a monster-of-the-week, where not much happens. Buffy's barely in it, in fact. She and Riley spend most of the episode caught in a time-loop sex thing. The lack of of Buffy alone really wouldn't bother me too much. The supporting cast is certainly strong enough to carry the show without her. But "Where the Wild Things Are" also features a confusing plot and some pretty standard haunted house stuff. Honestly, if you're in a hurry to get through season four, you could skip this episode and not miss much.

The episode revolves around another party at UC Sunnydale. Things always go wrong at "Buffy" parties, a fact that the characters often lament... but they never just turn down the invites. This time the Initiative boys are throwing a party. Unfortunately, their frat house is haunted and their about to be over run with poltergeists. It seems that Buffy and Riley's passionate encounters have unlocked some repressed spirits. Specifically, children who used to live in the house and who were punished for their hormonal urges. The party is soon canceled on account of ghosts. Buffy and Riley are trapped inside and have no idea that they're "powering" the supernatural happenings with their sex. The Scoobies track down Giles, (who Willow and Xander are shocked to learn sings in coffee bars) and together they all set out to save Buffy and Riley and stop the ghosts.

The best parts of this episode actually revolve around Anya and Spike. They have an interesting connection, as they're both former evil demons trying to adjust to a more human way of life. Their relationship will be explored further in season six, but for now it's fun to see them complaining about their love lives and mourning the loss of their powers. I really enjoy Anya's argument with Xander in the ice cream truck and I love that Anya brings Spike to the Initative party with her. Inspiring a jealous Xander to shout, "Hey, it's Hostile 17. Look everyone it's Hostile 17." Much to Spike's dismay. And you have to laugh when Anya trudges up the steps to battle the shrieking poltergeists shouting, "Oh shut up, you repressed cry babies." Spike's character continues to grow in this episode. Really, just that fact that he went to the party shows loneliness and lack of direction. The demons all hate him. The humans want him dead. All he has are the Scoobies and, honestly, he usually doesn't like them very much. Still, when Buffy and Riley are stuck in the house and Xander wants the others to save them, Spike automatically volunteers. His first instinct was to help Buffy and the Scoobies. It's only after he thinks about it for a minute that he remembered his evil-ness and how he detested them all, etc... It's the first time that Spike independently decides to help the Scoobie gang. Not for profit or to save his own neck, but just because he wants to. He quickly changes his mind and leaves them there, of course, but -Hey!- it's a start, right?.

On the downside, the Buffy and Riley scenes are kinna sweaty and pointless and icky. And the plot itself is a little bit silly. We already had a haunted frat party once this season in "Fear, Itself." And the "people stuck in a house" thing will be done better season six's "Older and Far Away." Honestly, I'm not sure what this episode is trying to say. I get the crazy old lady torturing the kids part, but is sexual abuse the message of the episode? Are we suppose to think that Buffy and Riely are being victimized? Because they seem pretty happy at the end. And how do Anya and Xander's problems fit into this? She thinks that sex defines their relationship, but how does that relate back to the haunted house? Is she suppose to discover that love goes deeper than sex, because I really don't get that from "Where the WIld Things Are." Usually, BTVS episodes are easier to "read" and have a more cohesive structure.

My favorite part of the episode: Spike's ingenious money-making plan. He just puts on his game-face, leaps out at people with a terrifying roar, and robs them as they head to the Bronze. So simple and creative and... Spike. "Plus, you know, funny."

Kind of dumb

Warning: Spoilers
I'm watching this show for the first time ever and only a couple of episodes have made me go 'What the hell was that?'. Surprise this is one of them!

Buffy and Riley are having lots of sex and that angers the house in which they're doing it in. The house, before it was a frat house, was an orphanage (or something) run by an uptight lady who punished the children when they were dirty (sexually). So the repressed children come back to house as poltergeists and they do very weird things. I mean, there's literally a scene where a bunch of people are touching a wall because it gave them orgasms.

Yeah that's the plot. It made me slightly uncomfortable. I mean, why can't Buffy have sex with someone without dangerous consequences? It just seems unfair.

I would add more but I don't want to think about this episode anymore

"All...night...long!"
Joxerlives18 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The Good; Nice that with Buffy and Riley ahem, preoccupied the other Scoobs have a chance to shine for a change.

The Bad; Vines look a little lame but apart from that all good.

Best line; Giles "Do you really think they're keeping it up? Oh for a different phrasing"

Women good/men bad; In this case a female villain, the religious zealot 'carer'

Jeez!; The drowning scenes are horrible, a very primal human fear.

Kinky dinky; Basically one big marathon sex session between Buffy and Riley (at least they use protection) plus the house sending sexual energy surging through it's inhabitants. Plus Anya and Xander in the ice-cream van. Anya comments that Xander and she both like his penis. Apparently there's only been 2 nights where Xander and Anya haven't had sex, to paraphrase Buffy 'Xander is quite the machine' Xander gets to kiss the lovely Julie. Xander refers to a big bursting poltergasm.

Calling Captain Subtext; Anya, Tara and Willow seem remarkably keen on Giles playing his guitar (Willow always had a thing for guitarists) again suggesting bi-Willow and even bi-Tara. Her revelation about her crush must have had Gillow fans going into overtime. Tara has a moment of ***phobia due to the house's influence. Spike and Anya bond over their past evil. Spike seems to want to be heroic when Xander asks for volunteers to rescue Buffy? Willow seems scared of horses although she seems to have gotten over that by the end of season 5. Tara tells Willow she can come 'Riding with me sometime' Ohhhhh matron! Willow asks Buffy if she still loves her despite having spilt 'something purple' on her peasant blouse (the answer is yes). Spike says that love is a terrible thing just as he does in 'Lover's Walk'. 'Dingoes ate my baby' poster visible for the last time.

Scoobies to the ER; Anya and Xander are pretty cut up by the end but their injuries seem to heal pretty fast, perhaps because they're mystical?

Where's Dawn? Home with Joyce

Apocalypses; 5,

Whedon Clichés (with kind permission from Boo) Scoobies in bondage: Buffy: 8 Giles: 4 Cordy: 5 Will: 3 Jenny: 1 Angel: 4 Oz: 1 Faith: 3 Joyce: 1 Wes: 1

Alternate scoobies: Buffy: 6 Giles: 3 Cordy: 1 Will: 2 Jenny: 2 Angel: 3 Oz: 2 Joyce: 2 Xander: 3

Recurring characters killed: 7 Jesse, Flutie, Jenny, Kendra, Larry, Snyder, Professor Walsh

Total number of scoobies: 6 actually going to reduce this as Spike not officially a Scooby by a long way Giles, Xander, Willow, Buffy, Anya, Riley,

Xander demon magnet: 5 Preying Mantis Lady, Inca Mummy Girl, Drusilla, VampWillow, Anya (arguably Buffy & Faith with their demon essences?)

Scoobies shot: Giles: 2 Angel: 3 Oz: 4

Notches on Scooby bedpost: Giles: 2; Joyce & Olivia, possibly Jenny Cordy: 1? Buffy: 3; Angel, Parker, Riley Angel: 1;Buffy Joyce: 1;Giles, possibly Ted Oz: 3; Groupie, Willow & Verucca Faith:2 ;Xander, Riley Xander: 2; Faith, Anya Willow: 1;Oz

Questions and observations; What the heck does Xander mean when he refers to people going 'all Felicity with their hair'? Anya's humanity is still a work in process despite her having a soul. Once more, Buffy goes Christian bashing.

Marks out of 10; 7/10 good ep without being brilliant

Buffy and Riley sitting in a tree...
ossie8517 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A party at one of The Initiative dorm is the talk of the campus. Buffy and Riley's continual sexual activities accidentally release a mystical force on the house. Everyone falls victim to this and the gang decide to get Giles to help them. It is up to Xander and Anya to save the day while Willow, Tara and Giles perform a spell.

Why It's So Good - Xander and Anya's relationship get a share of the focus, which has often been played for laughs. A creepy and offputting bad guy this week, but Riley and Buffy sure had fun.

Watch Out For - Giles singing.

Quote - "You know ... you take the killing for granted. And then it's gone, and you're like, 'I wish I'd appreciated it more.' Stopped and smelled the corpses, you know?" - Spike.

Poltergeist
Realrockerhalloween3 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This is the weak episode of the season focusing on the group attending a party at the initiative and are being haunted by spirits. It makes no sense as the scoobies find out the kids are a reflection of the abuse their caretaker bestowed on them yet aren't dead. The vines taking over or the orgy walk makes no sense as the kids were discouraged from that activity and no plants are involved. The group does a seance scene to guide them into the light yet as it isn't real poltergeist how would it work as they are adults living lives.

Also I find it funny the initiative has been there all this time yet never noticed any strange on goings making them incompetent or stupid as they are the experts here. The only part I find interesting is how Spike & Anya relate to one another being ex demons missing the thrill and thinking of partners they lost. Even though Anya is still knew to being human she thinks being psychical every night is a sign of love and without it they are breaking up coming off as silly as she seemed to have common sense last season.

Suuuuuuper uncomfortable
mraajdar19 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Who's idea was this? Why was it ever greenlit? Is there anyone who can honestly watch this and simultaneously not be icked out by it and also not come across as a complete creep? The entire plot is just an excuse for an extended Riley/Buffy sex scene. The sex is "artistic", there are camera cuts and blankets and dark lighting, but the audio...omg the audio...the mouth sounds and the moaning could be straight up out of p*rn, not even joking. There was a kind of poltergeist / haunted house story tacked on, but I feel like the only point of it was to set up a mean old prude lady who could be pointed at if anyone in the audience raised an eyebrow at all the...rest.

Was it an old school feminist thing like how basically all the ladies in Ye Olde 60s Star Trek were nearly naked and rubbing on Captain Kirk, but hey it's ok, cuz "idk liberating or something"? It comes across that way and it's honestly the only explanation I can think of. It has aged extremely poorly, regardless. Also I'm really, really glad I did not watch it with my mother.

I'll throw it a couple of stars literally just for Giles' singing though cuz that was genuinely pretty good.

Sex and poltergeists!
Tweekums18 September 2019
After fighting off an unusual pairing of a vampire and a demon, Buffy and Riley agree that they must tell Giles... but not until they've enjoyed a night of passion. It seems the pair can't keep off each other! Meanwhile Anya seems to be having the opposite problem as she fears Xander is losing interest after one night without sex! Things get strange when the gang attend a party Lowell House, the fraternity house above the Initiative's base. Buffy and Riley find a bedroom while others start to get strong urges and see ghostly apparitions before the house seems to come alive. The gang must find Giles and discover what is behind the events.

This was a fun episode; for once Buffy's role was relatively small leaving others to solve this problem. While nobody was killed there were some scary moments... at one point a main character has a tendril impale her right through her hand and another character is almost drowned. There is a lot of TV friendly sex and sex talk which might surprise some viewers... it is also likely to cause some laughs; notably a scene where Anya and Xander discuss their sex lives in an ice cream van not realising a queue is building up. Away from the scares there is fun to be had when Xander, Willow, Tara and Anya go to find Giles and find him singing The Who's 'Behind Blue Eyes' and it appears that Willow and Tara are continuing to grow closer. Overall this might not be a classic episode but I still enjoyed it.

Relationships, Desire and Poltergeists
claudio_carvalho19 August 2006
In a party in Lowell House, sexuality is in the air. Buffy and Riley make love all the time, while Willow, Tara, Xander, Anya and Spike observe the weird behavior of the youngsters and the presence of ghosts. They meet Giles, and they find the origin of the poltergeists in the place.

This episode presents a funny discussion between Anya and Xander about relationship and sex, but the greatest surprise is Giles singing The Who's "Behind Blue Eyes". He never disappoints and actually it is a great homage to the also British Roger Daltrey. My vote is eight.

Title (Brazil): "Onde as Coisas Malucas Acontecem?" ("Where the Crazy Stuffs Happen?")

This episode is a Classic !
nicofreezer10 June 2022
Maybe not top 10 but top 25 without a doubt.

This episode of season 4 center around Xander and the reste of the cast, i appreciated not to see Buffy for once, always her is annoying at last.

A student party in a Big haunted house ! And funny lines After funny lines, Can you ask for more ? I dont think so. Monster of the week episodes have always been the best Buffy episode by far, especialy when the main story is kinda "weak" like the Season 4 main story with the initiative, really not fashinating.

If someone want to discover Buffy for the first time, this episode is a good choise for them to love the show, A Classic and 45 minutes of pure entertaiment 9/10.
