The "Paris green" poison dye referred to was so named because it was first worn in a gown by the Empress Eugenie of France, which was such a spectacular color that it became the fashion rage in all manner of products. After many people were killed in the Victorian era from manufacturing it, France and Germany made it illegal, and the dye finally was discontinued in consumer products in England, led in part by Queen Victoria herself publicly banning it from the royal palace. It can still be seen in many impressionist paintings, because the vivid green dye was used as a pigment in painter's oils.
