KELLY'S SONG IS A SAD SONG.

10 Stars.

Season 4 premier episode, which should have won an Emmy for best story and best actress (Stephanie Powers). William Conrad, who actually presented an Emmy to Peter Falk for COLUMBO at the awards ceremony, always said competition was not EZ.

Very good writing, poignant at times, and well directed by series regular William Wiard, who was also directing the FBI tv series. SS. Schweitzer wrote the story, later writer for BARETTA.

This marked Stephanie Powers (in the title role) second appearance on the series, quite popular on tv at the time, appearing in a recent episode of HARRY O. Powers became a tv star in the mid 60s as THE GIRL FROM UNCLE.

Cannon asks former call girl Kelly to return (undercover, of course) to her old profession to snag a notorious pimp, now a cop killer. Stephanie Powers is very convincing in this role and you really feel sorry for what her character has to go through. Question; did Schweitzer cleverly try to edge in a same-sex relationship, as another call girl seemed to hint she and Kelly should hook up? The scene is brief, but worth a look.

William Conrad and Stephanie Powers make a great team, and play well off each other as you will see. Truthfully, she would have made a super addition to this show as a regular, IF she had the opportunity.

Gag scene alert: Cannon bumps a jerk into a pool with his big tummy, and was that really scripted? The scene got a lot of airplay from CBS, promoting this episode in late summer.

Excellent music score, composed by George Romanis, who did lots of work for MEDICAL CENTER and HAWAII FIVE O. Stone-face Frank Marth returns as a detective (instead of a villain this time). James Sloyan plays Fred, who had recently made an appearance in THE STING. Yes, Frank Bonner (from WKRP) has an early role here. Frank passed in 2021. Famous bit actor Bob Harks makes his 10th series appearance playing a guy hanging around the country club. What a great gig.

Dedicated to all us Stephanie Powers fans.

SEASON 4 EPISODE 1 remastered color CBS dvd box set. 6 dvd set. 21 hrs. 2016 release.

A really bad start to season four.

When I watched this episode of "Cannon", I felt very confused. What was the purpose of this episode and why did they make it in the first place?! And, why was Cannon barely in the episode?!

When the episode begins, you see a guy try to kill someone in the hospital. Despite cops being EVERYWHERE and waiting for him, they don't catch him...something that inexplicably happens throughout the show. Killing off Ellis is practically as difficult as doing it to the Terminator!

In the next scene, the cops call Cannon and inform him, like it or not, Kelly (Stephanie Powers) is going to have to help him capture Ellis. After all, he is infatuated with her and used to be her pimp. So, despite having a fine life, she agrees to pose as a high price call-girl once again. But, of course, when Ellis makes his moves on Kelly, the cops blow it...again. What does Cannon have to do throughout this one? Not much!

This would have been a bad show even if it wasn't Cannon...but worse because Cannon IS the star of the show. I have no idea what's going on with this one...what behind the scenes machinations made the folks make this mess. Dumb and dumbfoundingly different.
