Hiken Was A Genius
ccthemovieman-116 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The writing in here is Exihbit A of how great a comedy TV show this was....it's just hilarious. Nat Hiken, the creator of the show and chief writer, was a comic genius.

Toody and Muldoon go undercover on their day off. It's not Muldoon's idea; he wanted to stay home and watch the World Series game. However, Toody, insulted because he and his partner were the only ones in the precinct not getting a citation for doing something good, begged the Captain for a chance to work off-duty and perhaps, earn a citation for some form of bravery.

They wind up at Yankee Stadium with some very funny results. Toody is dressed as a Yankee merchandise hawker and gets into it with a little kid, then actually spots a pickpocket (only because the guy has his hand in Toody's pocket!) and it goes on from there. Wally Cox plays the soft-spoken pickpocket "Benny," who ......well, let's leave it at that. What Cox does is amazing - both good and bad - and what happens to Muldoon later is even more amazing. The ending, too, with Captain Block, is guaranteed to leave you laughing out loud.

Along the way, we see some of the cast members from the old Bilko show, also written by Nat Hiken.

The best episode of a brilliant series...
wiredranch4 April 2024
I was only 7 when I saw this the first time (Car 54 and Dobie Gillis were my childhood faves - both hold up 60+ years later).

Joe E. Ross was such a ham - but between his OOH-OOHs and "Do you mind? DO YOU MIND?", he was such a lovable nincompoop.

Tall, long in the face Fred Gwynne was the perfect foil for the short, pie-faced partner.

Wally Cox made his guest spot memorable.

But this episode was really Paul Reed's, the long-suffering Captain Block. His reactions to Toody, followed by Muldoon, being arrested were absolutely priceless.

Kudos to Nat Hiken for creating this consistently laugh out loud series. Just wish it lasted longer than two seasons - but grateful for being able to rewatch the.60 episodes all these years later.
