It's a gamble

Dan O'Herlihy plays one of San Francisco's crusading newspaper editors and it's his wife Bethel Leslie who hires Checkmate because her husband has had threats on his life. The paper is on a crusade against legalized gambling and that got some folks very upset.

O'Herlihy is not a cooperative client. He's a kid who worked his way up and married wealthy and it was Leslie's money that purchased the newspaper for him. Even among their own social set there are friends who don't like the editorial stand the paper has taken on a proposed referendum on gambling. That's only for Nevada.

With more and more places taking up legalized gambling as a method now to raise government revenue the story seems almost old fashioned and quaint.

In the end though it's really another motive why someone wants O'Herlihy dead. You'll have to see this through to discover why.
