- Cheyenne is assigned as a scout to accompany a green captain to deliver supplies to another fort. The trooper assigned to him is also green who enlisted to avoid jail who finds he isn't as brave as he pretends in real battle.
- Cheyenne returns as his enlistment as a scout has ended. Upon arriving he reports to Major Prewitt and Captain Duquesne he saw 200 Shoshone led by Gray Wolf which delayed his return. Prewitt asks Cheyenne to scout for one last time to lead troops with supplies to Fort Burnside. It is to be led by the green Captain Duquesne from the east. They won't be able to rely on help from their home fort. When he tries to befriend a new recruit with a shady past, he finds himself stuck with Trooper Dailey as his courier. Neither the captain or trooper have never had to face the business end of a rifle in battle with the Indians. The captain dismisses most of Cheyenne's concerns but finds himself surrounded by rampaging Shoshone. In their initial battle Dailey freezes up so Duquesne has him arrested. Against Cheyenne's recommendation the wounded captain decides to take refuge in an abandoned Army fort where they find Jen Claypool and her daughter Sarah stranded by a broken wagon. Duquesne must find a way out.—DrDOS
