Luther Van Dam (Jerry Van Dyke)'s father, Horace "Dutch" Van Dam (Paul Dooley) wore #27 while playing offensive tackle and defensive end for the Danville Silver Streaks. He also collected clippings from the Danville Commercial-News. Both of these are real entities with the newspaper still in operation. Jerry Van Dyke, like his character, was born and raised in Danville, Illinois.
Horace "Dutch" Van Dam (Paul Dooley) attempts to sell Hayden Fox (Craig T. Nelson) an antique football helmet for $100 on the promise that it carries a unique story. When pressed, the only part of the story he reveals is "Harvard 1946". The 1946 Harvard Crimson were 7-2 with losses to Rutgers and rival Yale.
Throughout this episode, sports memorabilia salesman Horace "Dutch" Van Dam (Paul Dooley) wears a St. Louis Browns hat. The Browns participated in Major League Baseball from 1902-1953 before moving to Baltimore. The team is now known as the Baltimore Orioles.
Though he plays his father, Paul Dooley is only three years older than Jerry Van Dyke.
Though the principle cast is named in the credits, only four actors appear in this episode: Craig T. Nelson, Shelley Fabares, Jerry Van Dyke and guest star Paul Dooley. Bill Faagerbake is in it for a few minutes.
