Historically Significant Combat Episode
"Luck With Rainbows" is a story about British Major Cole Hughes (played by Michael Evans) who decides to commandeer Lieutenant Hanley & Kirby for a major sabotage mission after seeing them in action.
The beginning sequence was very original and creative, Hanley Littlejohn, & Kirby at their best. The pillbox sequence was cleverly conceived and fun to watch..
Archival footage is outstanding and very touching. Historically, V-1 bombings began on June 13, 1944, one week after the D-Day landings. The 'V' came from the German word Vergeltungswaffen, meaning weapons of reprisal. They were nicknamed "buzz bombs" by the British due to the distinct buzzing sound made by the pulse-jet engines powering the bombs. During the first V-1 bombings, up to 100 V-1s fell every hour on London. Over an 80 day period, more than 6,000 persons were killed, with over 17,000 injured and astronomical infrastructure loss.
Screen Writers' Root & Bishop did too much with the script. I like the original plot before the convoy mishap. I expected the Major to be more down to earth and practical for a soldier of his repute. Consider what A. D. Flowers could have done with the ending following the original game plan! "Luck With Rainbows" kept my curiosity up but some of the dialog was too fast to take in. It was still a pretty good and historically significant episode.
