After the German colonel drives up, the German officer and radioman attempt to grab rifles and shoot Saunder's group. When they are shot the colonel, his officer aide and driver take cover. The aide grabs a rifle left in a holster on the driver's side of another German vehicle.
The rifle appears to be a KAR 98, the standard issued bolt action rifle of WW2 German infantry. He takes cover behind a pillar and begins firing at the Americans. The bolt is clearly visible, yet he never uses it to chamber another round while firing. In fact, he fires off several rounds in a row as if the rifle was a semi-automatic. The sound effect used even sounds the same as the one used for the American M-1 Garand.
