Sgt. Saunders and his squad are assigned to bomb German oil tanks and come across a barefoot and homeless but resourceful French orphan, who says his name is "Bijou" (which means "Little Jewel" in French) in the ruins of a village. Caje and the other soldiers feed him rations and chocolate but cannot provide him with the boots he sorely needs for his exposed feet. Bijou gives them directions to find a safe-house, then follows them after they leave the village. They hide from a German patrol but as they get closer to their target, a depot, they're soon surprised by heavy German machine gun fire. They succeed in killing the German soldiers with a well-thrown grenade followings a perilous firefight. Bijou then reappears, wearing a pair of German boots, which he claims to have found. The squad then adopts Kirby's dogged opinion that the child is not trustworthy. Caje is captured by the Germans, making communication with Bijou impossible although he seems to understand some of what they say, even tossing away the boots that had cost him their trust. But is the child a survivor or a manipulative informer?
