While batting at baseball practice with his team, Eddie is hit in the ribs by a pitcher with shaky command, knocking the wind out of him. He knows there are pitchers that throw even wilder. Eddie orders diving equipment, showing more interest in it than baseball. Meanwhile, Mrs. Livingston is preparing a speech over cooking sauerbraten to give to her speech class. Eddie's coach Xander Malloy (Richard X. Slattery, "CPO Sharkey") tells Tom that Eddie has quit the team. Eddie admits to Tom that he is afraid to be hit again. His father tries to impart the lesson of getting back on your horse when you fall off. Tom further relates taking a chance on getting hurt to his own experiences.
