Putting the boot in.
Sleepin_Dragon7 January 2020
A new directive is launched, to ensure the men are taking proper care of their feet. Not being one to avoid an order Captain Mainwaring puts his men through their paces to ensure their feet are toughened up.

Series Four has started off with some great episodes, Boots, Boots, Boots is another funny instalment. Who would have thought that thirty minutes about the subject of feet could be so funny, it's not a classic, but does have some fine moments, the scenes in the shoe shop for me being the funniest, Eric Chitty is terrific as Mr Sedgewick, very funny the way he deals with Wilson and Pike. Lowe as always showing he can be physically funny, as he walks to his office in smaller shoes.

Funny. 7/10

A nice, understated farce

Warning: Spoilers
Though it's not generally thought of as one of the great Dad's Army episodes, Boots, Boots, Boots is a lovely, smaller episode after two big, silly ones to open series 4. A simple premise, Boots, Boots, Boots is about Mainwaring's overbearing attempts to toughen up the platoon's feet by forcing them on routine 20 mile marches. This causes various members of the Home Guard to cook up a plan to sabotage their Captain, involving switching his shoes for a tighter pair that will prevent him being able to march. The farce that ensues makes good use of all the main cast and comes to a fantastically understated conclusion loaded with dramatic irony but which holds back on showing the imminent comeuppance. Like all the best Dad's Army episodes, Boots, Boots, Boots is also peppered with great little beats and ideas along the way, notably a scene in which Mainwaring summarises his impression of Wilson's character as a precursor to a private foot examination, and an unusual moment of visual invention in which Pike has a nightmare that his feet are monstrously deformed.

More silly than funny

Dad's Army was always quite inconsistent its output. Some episodes were very clever while being absurdist, some were just silly farce. This is one of the latter.

From the moment the WIlson and Pike decide to sabotage Mainwaring's boots you know this is more caper than clever comedy. Once the platoon, indepedent of Wilson and Pike, decide to do the same you can see how this is going to progress.

From that point it is quite predictable. There's some decent hijnks in the shoe store but that's about it.

To make matters worse, the ending is anticlimactic. Instead of some great comeuppance the episode just ends, without any real conclusion.

It's all fairly low-key and beneath the usual Dad's Army standard.
