Jim Davis: Jock Ewing

Quotes

  • Jock Ewing : Hey, Jordan, come on over, lemme buy you a drink. What, uh, what happened?

Jordan Lee : [irate]  You tell me what happened.

Jock Ewing : Well, did the meeting go well?

Jordan Lee : It didn't go at all.

Jock Ewing : [impatiently]  What do you mean, it didn't go at all?

Jordan Lee : It's that son of yours, J.R. He seems to be letting that... witch, Leslie Stewart, lead him around by the nose. We can't do business with J.R. Not so long as that uppity broad is calling the shots at Ewing Oil.

  • Bobby Ewing : [as Pam readies herself to go downstairs where the family is going to toast Donna and Ray]  I went to see Alex Ward today, Pam.

Pamela Barnes Ewing : Alex? Why?

Bobby Ewing : Lucy told me she got her job because of your influence with him.

Pamela Barnes Ewing : Oh, Bobby. It was nothing. I did it for Lucy.

Bobby Ewing : Pam, you told me that you weren't gonna see him again. Now why did you go see him behind my back? Why couldn't you tell me about It?

Pamela Barnes Ewing : Well, to be honest, I didn't think you'd understand.

Bobby Ewing : Do you understand?

Pamela Barnes Ewing : What do you mean?

Bobby Ewing : Did you go see him for Lucy, or... because you wanted to see him?

Pamela Barnes Ewing : [adamant]  I went to see him for Lucy.

    [fumbles with necklace]

Pamela Barnes Ewing : Why are you trying to make so much out of this? It's exactly the reason why I didn't mention it. I was afraid you'd misunderstand.

Bobby Ewing : [helps her with necklace]  Pam, do you understand?

Pamela Barnes Ewing : What's that supposed to mean?

Bobby Ewing : I went to see Alex, because you weren't around, and I wanted to know what was going on. And he told me something very interesting.

    Pamela Barnes Ewing : What?

Bobby Ewing : He said that you wouldn't have looked at him... If there wasn't something wrong with our marriage. Is there?

Pamela Barnes Ewing : [she turns away, then faces him again]  There was. You changed. You became different. I didn't feel loved or cared for, that you even knew when I was around. I was alone most of the time, Bobby, even when you were here. Well, that may be okay for some wives. But I needed more.

Bobby Ewing : You said "there was." Do you think we still have a problem?

[a knock on the door interrupts]

Jock Ewing : [opens door]  Come on downstairs. They're here.

  • [last lines]

Miss Ellie Ewing : I'd like to make an announcement. I think it will make Donna very happy.

Jock Ewing : What's that, Miss Ellie?

Miss Ellie Ewing : This morning, when Donna and Ray were getting married, the DOA went to court. We got an injunction. We stopped the Takapa development.

Jock Ewing : [barks]  You what?

Miss Ellie Ewing : We stopped Takapa.

Jock Ewing : What are you talking about? I am Takapa!

Miss Ellie Ewing : [shocked]  You're what?

Jock Ewing : I am Takapa!

[puts his glass down, walks out furiously, leaves dismayed Miss Ellie standing there]

Sue Ellen Ewing : [amidst stunned silence, raises her glass]  Here's to you, Donna. Welcome to the Ewing family.

  • Jock Ewing : [slid the doors closed to lash out at J.R]  I couldn't believe it. My own son. Letting some little no-account alley cat swing you by your big toe. Letting her screw up the deal with the cartel. I thought I brought you up better than that.

    [doesn't hear Miss Ellie enter]

Jock Ewing : A woman's place is in the bedroom. Sure as hell not in the boardroom.

Miss Ellie Ewing : Very nice, Jock.

Jock Ewing : Oh. Didn't hear you come in, Ellie.

    Miss Ellie Ewing : Obviously.

Jock Ewing : Now look, Miss Ellie, you know that I didn't mean to...

Miss Ellie Ewing : I know what you meant. You believe that the woman's place is two steps behind the man. Except when walking through a minefield.

Jock Ewing : You don't understand, Ellie. J.R. let that uppity Lesley Stewart spoil his deal with the cartel.

Miss Ellie Ewing : Well, you and J.R. should know all about spoilers, Jock.

Jock Ewing : Now, what's that supposed to mean, Miss Ellie?

Miss Ellie Ewing : Everything you touch you spoil. Relationships, people's lives.

    J.R. Ewing : Well, Mama, I think you're exaggerating a little bit.

Miss Ellie Ewing : Am I? J.R., you and your daddy use people up and then throw them away. Even members of your own family.
