DANIEL BOONE – Pompey- 1964

This is the tenth episode of the long running 1964-70 series about the life of American frontiersman and explorer, Daniel Boone. The lead is played by Fess Parker. Also in the mix are Albert Salmi, Ed Ames, Patricia Blair, Veronica Cartwright and Darby Hinton.

In this episode Fess Parker and Albert Salmi get involved with a runaway slave. The slave, Brock Peters, escapes from Peter Whitney who is returning Peters to a farm further in country. Peters steals some iron working tools from Parker and heads off into the woods. These tools are hard to replace so Parker and his pal, Albert Salmi track Peters down.

They quickly catch up with the man who is somewhat hobbled by the leg irons. Parker offers to remove the irons and let Peters go on his way. Parker does not hold with slavery. While doing this, the slave caretaker, Peter Whitney shows. He holds his gun on the men and demands that Parker return Peters to his custody.

This, 'friendly," discussion ends when a roving party of Shawnee come a calling. The Indians attack the outnumbered men but are driven off by Peters. Peters had grabbed up his chains, then, charged into the middle of the Shawnee, knocking them over with the heavy chains he was swinging. The natives beat a hasty retreat in awe of the brave man.

Whitney is wounded in the battle and needs some medical attention. They take the man to Fort Booneborough for some emergency repairs. It will be at least two weeks before Whitney will be able to move again under his own steam.

Parker uses the time teaching Peters how to, hunt, fish and trap. Parker offers to outfit Peters and send him off to be a free man. Peters though had given his word not to escape after Whitney promised to not chain him again.

Now a big war party of Shawnee show up at the fort. The locals arm up and wait for an attack. Turns out the Shawnee were highly impressed with Peters from the earlier attack. They wish to buy Peters. Not as a slave, but to offer him a place in the tribe. They could use a mighty warrior such as Peters.

A deal is quickly made and Peters joins the Shawnee. Whitney is pleased as well at the huge pile of furs he got in exchange.

Veteran big screen director, Joseph H Lewis makes it all look easy in this entertaining episode. Lewis is well known to fans of film noir has the helmsman on, GUN CRAZY, SO DARK THE NIGHT, MY NAME IS JULIA ROSS and THE BIG COMBO.
