DANIEL BOONE – The Sound of Wings – 1964

This is the seventh episode of the long running 1964-70 series about the life of American frontiersman and explorer, Daniel Boone. The lead is played by Fess Parker. Also in the mix are Albert Salmi, Ed Ames, Patricia Blair, Veronica Cartwright and Darby Hinton.

This one has the British again trying to set up a secret alliance with several of the Native tribes down the Kentucky area. Michael Rennie hires Parker to guide him on a mission to rescue 4 British officers being held for ransom. At least that is the story Rennie tells Mister Boone. (Fess Parker) Once they reach the tribal area Rennie wants, he gives Parker a crack on the head with the butt of his pistol. He then changes clothes with Parker and dumps him down a hillside. Rennie enters the Native village and claims to be the famous scout, Daniel Boone. This of course impresses the Natives as everyone has heard of the famous frontiersman and fighter.

Rennie's plan fails to fly however, as Parker survives the tumble down the hill and now shows at the village. When he claims to be Boone, the local chief, Frank De Kova has the two men fight it out. This idea ends up with Rennie getting a sound beating. Parker makes his own peace treaty with De Kova that shuts the British out if war should come. Rennie is lucky to get away with his life. Not so lucky is Rennie's contact with the local tribe, Michael Pate. A roasting at the stake is in his future.

Michael Pate was an Australian actor who spent 20 years in Hollywood playing all sorts of ethnic roles. The name might not mean much, but you will recognize his puss once you see him.

Klaatu in Kentucky

Daniel is approached by British Major Peter Wellington to join him in a mission to recover a lost British patrol in Wyandot country. He agrees, but complications are fast to arrive.

Another good hour enhanced by getting out of Boonesborough and on the trail early, and the series is always strongest when it presents a historical backdrop. Authenticity is again enhanced by casting a Briton as a Briton; Michael Rennie - alien Klaatu in "The Day the Earth Stood Still" - brings the accent and mannerisms that will carry the hour. "F-Troop" regular Frank Dekova takes on at least an intended more serious Native American role here. Mingo and Yadkin are again standing by for rescue duty.

On to the history side. The hour moves back to the pre-Revolution period again, and its plausible to see the Wyandot tribe's loyalties in play. They were originally centered in the Ontario region, then by the time of the Revolution residing in Ohio and Michigan. They did fight on the Crown side during the war, and directly against the real Boone at the Battle of Blue Licks, Ky. On August 19, 1782. The real Israel Boone was killed in that action. Starting with this hour the Mid-South tribesmen start looking more like Great Plains warriors, and that will be a constant in the seasons to come.

Muddier is the rationale for Wellington's mission into Wyandot country. He first attempts to convince Daniel the French and Indian War could break out again, easily dismissed by Dan. Then he tries a humanitarian argument for rescuing the patrol, while admitting that the Crown does want tribal help; nonetheless Dan dutifully heads out with him. Keep in mind that there was no runup to the Revolution in Boonesborough; it sprang up concurrently with the first shots at Lexington and Concord in 1774

Redcoat report: Impossible to tell what Rennie's regimental colors are in the black-and-white format. He claims to be of "His Majesty's Rifles," no such unit in existence as of 1775.

Nonetheless, a great mixture of wilderness adventure and frontier great-power politics; another early-season win for the series.
