Lawndale needs Kevin!
Tweekums9 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
When Jane and Daria see Kevin wearing a new leather jacket at the mall they make the mistake of pointing out that it is a motorcycle jacket and wearing such a jacket if you don't ride a bike is like wearing shoulder pads if you don't play football... inevitably the next day he is riding a motorbike. When challenged to do a wheelie he attempts but only succeeds in crashing into the Tommy Sherman Memorial Tree; killing it and straining his knee in the process. With his knee sprained Kevin is unable to play football which has many unexpected consequences; he has to dump Brittany because 'cheerleaders can only date players', the team starts to lose which in turn leads to Lawndale High being considered a loser school in a loser town... if things are to return to normal Daria and Jane will have to find away to give Kevin his confidence back so he can return to the football field.

While I don't think Kevin hurting his knee could have such a catastrophic on the school and the town I did find this a very funny episode. I liked how the accident referred back to a season one episode by having Kevin crash into the late Tommy Sherman's tree, the fact that the accident wasn't at all dramatic served to make it even funnier! Other highlights include the cheerleaders thinking Tommy Sherman's ghost haunts the school and Mr DeMartino catching them attempting an exorcism and the fashion club being ignored at a trendy shop because they go to a 'loser school'. Another good thing about this episode was something it did not feature... bickering between Daria and Jane; Daria finally seems to have accepted Tom.

It's got a cameo by Artie AND Daria uses the word 'self-imolation!

This is one of the best episodes of season four. Part of this is because it does NOT feature animosity between Daria and Jane and because it is so gosh-darn funny.

Early in the episode, Daria makes a comment and Kevin takes it to mean he should buy a motorcycle. While on his scooter, he has a mishap---injuring his leg AND breaking the Tommy Sherman memorial tree (Sherman was a jerk who died in an earlier episode--"The Misery Chick"). As a result, Kevin has lost his confidence and the school team starts losing. Unexpectedly, this has LOTS of consequences on the town, Daria's parents and even the Fashion Club! So, it's up to Daria and Jane to set things right--and actually help the school's biggest idiot to become a man (so to speak).

This episode has a lot like. It was very funny and particularly funny bits involved the exorcism and Kevin's motivational speech to the youngsters. Very clever.

Tommy Sherman's memorial tree
safenoe29 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This episode highlights the Friday Night Lights importance of football (not the soccer football (the European one, AC Milan, Manchester, if you know what I mean) in American high schools and society generally. With Kevin's self-inflicted injury (he destroyed the Tommy Sherman memorial tree), house prices drop, the football team cannot win a game, and Kevin loses his self-esteem.

Thankfully order is restored in the Lawndale universe at the end, with even a flower sprouting from Kevin's crutch implanted in the Tommy Sherman memorial tree spot.

I think MTV should consider rebooting Daria. I'd love to know Daria's take on 9/11 (The wrap-up movie Is it College Yet? didn't deal with 9/11 even though it was broadcast about 6 months after), hipsters, same sex marriage, Trump, globalization, social media, music videos, The Sopranos.
