Her Ghost in the Fog
ttapola5 February 2011
A significant improvement over the previous episode, which - while still OK - was Dawson's Creek on autopilot. This episode offers insight into both Dawson and Joey's mind with some help from a new character, who has both a positive and a negative effect on the show in general.

The negative: Abby vanishes from existence (although one could say she's standing *just* outside the frame) for three consecutive episodes, like a ghost. Granted, this is necessary in order to make room for Devon, but it also just proves that at this point the show already had too many main characters, whether they were included in the opening credit sequence (back in the 1990s they still had those!) or were listed, week after week, as "Special Guest Stars". The fact that Devon displays Abby-like character traits (her bluntness), does not help.

The positive: The plot actually *demands* a new character - something which was not the case with The McPhees. And Rachael Leigh Cook makes most out of the first of her only three episodes. Interestingly, Devon and Abby share only one episode, #2.18 - I wonder which of the many characters gets sidelined then. Watching Rachael Leigh Cook at already the fifth year of her career when she was only 20 here in Dawson's Creek also makes me wonder why she too, like Monica Keena, never *really* made it big time. When one's most visible roles in the decade after turning 20 are a short recurring role stint in Las Vegas and half a dozen episodes in both Robot Chicken and Psych, something is not right. She may not have been the New Jodie Foster, but when a woman who is beautiful like a doll and *can* act unlike the endless talentless blondes does not succeed in Hollywood, we can only lament on that place's obsession with blonde women.

Regardless, this 7/10 episode proves there is still something left to explore in the Dawson - Joey love story, but one cannot forget what Devon observes about the nature of that relationship.

Great way to summarize the show so far...

Warning: Spoilers
It was the second episode from my best of tape I used to watch as a teen, and to me this episode was perfectly picked. It was about the making of Dawson's new movie, that more or less, retold everything about his and Joey's relationship. We also know more about Andie's « illness » and Jen gets to meet a new guy. Even her grandma would approve... Rachael Leigh Cook and Jason Behr guest as Joey and Dawson's counterparts for his movie. Which gives the episode, the little push it needed to be fresh and interesting. The drama between Andie and Pacey, is more compelling than Dawson and Joey's bickering. But it also makes Pacey look condescending to Dawson, and a fool. When we think of how he will fail, at salvaging his relationship from exactly what he pompously thought he would, there. Dawson and Joey are at their most annoying this season, but that's how they work, I guess... And Jen is just perfecting her disastrous love life. It's still very weird to see Jack as the « other man » in those episodes. But it also adds more layers to his character. And honestly, it's obvious that gay or not, he was just Joey's rebound guy. We also get another glimpse at Joey's fleeting passion for drawing, and a funny awkward moment between her, Dawson, and the nude model (aka: Devon, Dawson's movie's Joey). I think it's the last time we get to see her attend an art class in the series. But I'm not sure we can call that a plot hole. Overall the episode is great at doing everything the show is about. Drama, romance, a little humor and a lot of self awareness. I love the soundtrack for this episode too, Barenaked Ladies during the movie shoot. And « Sad Eyes » when everyone leaves the set, and go their separate ways.

The One With Dawson's Movie...

Warning: Spoilers
I went "meh" about this episode. I could take it, or I could leave it. It really does not bother me, at all. It's an okay episode, but that's all I can really say about it. It doesn't interest me a lot, since it's all about Dawson, but isn't it always? And I just got bored. It's one of my most "I don't really care" episodes ever.

In this episode, Dawson's movie is being filmed, and it brings make memories, for Dawson, and Joey. Jen is now Dawson's producer, which I love, and is hilarious. Pacey discovers that Andie is a severe manic depressive person, after he finds anti-depressant medication. And they get into a huge fight because Andie finds the medication more of an interference, and an annoyance, than helpful.

Overall, I give this episode a 5 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Okay.
