Warning: Spoilers
Unfortunately, this episode of Dean Martin's 'Man of the Week" roasts had a relatively weak dais, with a couple of presenters that weren't regulars. Chief among them were Pat Buttram and Jackie Vernon who actually offered up some pretty good lines. Hoochie-koochie girl Charo offered a few good lines herself as she did an Irish song for the guest of honor. Other off-beat speakers included Dionne Warwick, and Jack Carter, along with Ed's psychiatrist Dr. Ludwig Von Schtuffman (can't think of the comedian's name who portrayed him) who came up with my summary line above. The travesty is that Johnny Carson wasn't on hand (he sent a telegram from Las Vegas), or Doc Severinsen, who was as much a part of the Tonight Show as Ed himself. McMahon probably deserved better, but he still looked like he had a good time at his own expense.

Dean Martin Celebrity Roast: Ed McMahon (1973)

At one point in this episode Dean Martin jokes that they weren't able to get any big talent to come on the show. Just looking at the roasters it's easy to see that he really wasn't joking as even the regulars are not here to roach McMahon. Pat Buttram and Jackie Vernon do an okay job with their jokes but the real scene-stealer was Jack Carter who offers up some impersonations as well as a great gag dealing with John Wayne. Charo shows off her body and Dionne Warwick offers up some non-funny jokes. This wasn't the worst episode I've seen from the series but there's no doubt that it's the least impressing considering the names that they've got. With that said, they at least get some nice jokes at and makes it worth sitting through.

Episode: C+
