I'm not clear why Dean Martin ventured outside the celebrity realm for his 'Man of the Week' comedy roasts; the week before Truman Capote, the program featured Leo Durocher as the honoree, and a couple of weeks later it was Ralph Nader. This one didn't seem to be as funny as most, and distilled down to the half hour format, it didn't have a chance to really get going.
The roasters in attendance included Ted Knight, Audrey Meadows, Donald O'Connor, Rich Little, writer Joseph Wambaugh, boxer Rocky Graziano, and actress Jean Simmons. Foster Brooks got some laughs as a prison warden honoring Capote, and Audrey Meadows was introduced as intellectual writer Roberta Christian. Capote himself looked to be fairly amused by it all, as he managed to laugh it up with the folks on the dais firing the shots at him. To see and hear him though, one would never picture him as the author of the crime classic "In Cold Blood".
