The gist of the story is that a frontier trader was supplying Souix Indians with the recently introduced 50-cal ammunition that was being used to kill army troops. Supposedly, he had received a large shipment of the new 50-cal ammunition, and sold a bunch of it to the Indians for which he was going to be executed. He denied the charges. Further investigation revealed that the Indians were able to reload the cartridges that they had, when the actual ammunition manufacturers had not yet learned to do so. The day was saved when the secret hideout was discovered where the Indians were manufacturing reloads. I found no evidence of any Indians leading the way in reloading technology.
