Douglas Barr is introduced in the recurring role of Colonel Bill Stillfield, probably the most perfect gentleman in the history of television. Charlene, who has a fascination with everything World War II, fantasizes about dating a real life military man, and thinks that the girls have set her up when Bill arrives the higher the girls for a job redecorating a room at the VA. It's obvious that the chemistry is real and theie romance would dominate much of the next four seasons.
Charlene's fantasy about working at a canteen is silly but sweet, filled with pretty much every cliche of canteen musicals of the 1940's, rushed through with a lot of details covered in just half an hour and giving Anthony, Julia and Charlene a chance to sing about and deal with an interracial dance between Charlene and Anthony.
This is the episode where Julia gets to tell off Hitler on the phone, something she did hysterically later on with the future American version of the fuhrer. Quite memorable even though it wasn't done for Memorial Day, Veteran's Day and even Pearl Harbor Day. A welcome cameo by Hal Holbrook is always a good thing. The use of newsreels in the dream is tear inducing patriotically and one of the great moments of the show's history.
