Warning: Spoilers
When Mary Jo's father, Geoffrey Lewis, comes to visit, he is instantly taken with Charlene and Mary Jo is upset by the possible relationship growing between the two. It seems out of character for Mary Jo to become angry over set the situation, and she tells Charlene in know certain terms that if Charlene marries her father she will not call her mama. By this time in the first season, viewers came to see Mary Jo as a sensible character, next to Julia the most sensible of the four. But her inward insecurities over being a divorced woman and seeing her parents divorced brings out a different side of her, and that makes the situation fully realistic.

As for the other characters, there's a very amusing scene where Suzanne notices that Gone With the Wind is on TV and question the others as to whether or not they think that was the best time in history. Anthony is responses are hysterical, being both telling and amusing, so the audience does not feel like it is being lectured. Charlene's big heart is obvious, flattered by Lewis's attention, I'm genuinely attracted to him for his easygoing persona. As to the answer to the question over the picture that Charlene buys, no, this man is not the best looking man in the world.
