THE DETECTIVES – The Short Way Home - 1961

This one is episode 63 of the 97 episode run of, THE DETECTIVES. This series starred Robert Taylor and ran between 1959 and 1962. The first two seasons ran at a half hour and the last season had a runtime of an hour. The series followed the detective squad in a big city precinct. Cast regulars included, Mark Goddard, Russell Thorson, Tige Andrews, Lee Farr and Adam West. Robert Taylor headlines as Police Captain, Matt Holbrook.

Detective Captain Robert Taylor is paid a visit from the widow of a murdered cop. Taylor and the man had been partners 10 years before. The widow, Doreen Lang, is having problems with her two grown children, Don Quine and Enid Jaynes. The two are getting mixed up with the wrong kind of people.

Jaynes is dating minor mob type, Johnny Seven. Seven is planning to hold up a bank and wants to include Quine in his gang. "Listen kid, it is an easy 10 grand for just watching the door". Seven tells Quine. Needless to say, all the dollar signs has Quine chomping at the bit.

As it turns out, the Police are keeping tabs on Seven and his group. They know from various "sources" that Seven has a job coming up. Taylor pulls Miss Jaynes in for a talk. Taylor takes her down to the morgue and shows her several stiffs about the same age as her brother. This frightens the stuffing out of her and she is very forthcoming with info on Seven.

The Police stake out the bank that Seven and his bunch intend to hit. When the gang shows to pull the job, the Detective swoop in and but the grab on them. Seven is not all that inclined to go quietly and draws steel. All that does is help him collect several unwanted pieces of lead.

A quick, and to the point cop series that is really much better than I had been expecting. Enjoyed all the episodes I've seen so far.
