- Tasting the vegetarian' chili con carne that Larry wants to sell lands Ed in hospital. He's is soon released but forbidden to work, so Greg must fill in for him. Dharma takes Ed shoe shopping to the store that Montgomery Industries owns at the mall, so he shows Vaughn's sales team how much better an enthusiastic talent does it. Kitty pulls Ed up for his image, then tells Dharma he's putting off retirement until Greg takes over.—KGF Vissers
- A heart attack scare during Larry's business pitch for his chili causes Edward to reminisce about a simpler time in his life, when he wasn't a high-pressured "captain of industry" merely acquiring and merging other companies. The chili has a kick to it, and suddenly Edward feels a flush and has a shooting pain going up and down his left arm. Greg dials 911 and takes Edward to the emergency room. The doctors says that he had a mild heart attack, and he can go back to his normal routine in 2-3 weeks.
Trying to persuade him to adopt an easier life, Dharma is taken aback when Edward seizes command of a mall sports shoe outlet owned by his company and happily settles in as a crackerjack shoe salesman. Edward had gone into the store to buy a pair of walking shoes and saw that the salesperson was not attending to customers. Edward started attending the customers himself and loved it. Soon, he has the store back in shape. Dharma can see that working as a salesperson relaxes Edward and encourages him to work there.
Soon, Kitty's friends see Edward selling shoes at the mall and Kitty rushes to stop him. Kitty told her friends that it wasn't Edward, and it was instead Edward's semi recovered alcoholic brother Billy. Dharma tries to defend Edward telling Kitty that he is relaxed and enjoying himself. Edward realizes that selling shoes is not the right use of his time and leaves with Kitty.
Kitty angrily tells Dharma, that the real reason Edward hasn't retired is because he is waiting for Greg to take his place.
Meanwhile, picking up papers that need Edward's signature, Greg gets a taste of what life would be like as his father's business successor. He spends a little time in Edward's office and gets a taste for the good life. Janet (Shirley Prestia) is Edward's secretary and Howard (Terry Rhoads) was the senior most executive in the office after Edward. Howard is alarmed when Greg walks into the office and believes that Greg is joining the company permanently. Greg insists that he is not. Howard has been SVP of the Legal Department for 15 years and is hoping to take Edward's place once he retires. Greg starts looking at some papers and cannot hold himself back from passing a few instructions to get things right to Howard and the other employees at the office. Edward returns to the office and sees that Greg is a natural at leading people. Janet serves Greg's favorite cocoa and salt water taffies.
Dharma sympathizes with Greg about abandoning the practice he has built up over the past year-but since this seems to consist of crabby Marlene mismanaging the office and Pete "teaching" three gorgeous young women a "course" in sexual harassment, perhaps the transition won't be so hard after all. Dharma tells Greg that she felt that it was Kitty forcing Edward to work. She never considered that it was Edward wanting to work to protect the chair for Greg. Greg joins the office & leaves Pete & Marlene behind.
