Possibly my second or third favorite episode. Let's go for third. This episode reunites Martin Milner and Kent McCord (although too briefly for McCord) as two partner cops. When a councilman's wife is murdered, it's McCord's character—Detective Stang—who is suspected of being a dirty cop and framing Councilman Watson (James Darren) for a murder Stang did. Detective Halloran (Milner) is being pasted with the same brush and Steve finds he has mixed emotions; he has to wonder if the chief of police might be involved. But Dr. Sloan finds some real problems with the evidence, and he believes someone else is guilty. But he has to deal with Steve's boss Capt. Pike (Angie Dickinson still looking good from being Sgt. Pepper Anderson in the Police Woman TV series) and a hard-nosed police chief (Fred Dryer who has also been promoted from being Detective Rick Hunter). Then there is the media circus with reporters falling over one another dealing with stories of police corruption and payoffs. And Amanda is now "moonlighting" as the coroner to keep busy while she deals with the recent divorce from her husband; a character we never met in this series.
Steve might be getting heat; but Mark isn't deterred. He knows who did it but how can he prove it? Perhaps we might fall back upon the old sting. Have Councilman Watson meet with the chief while wearing a wire. Sounds good but look for a twist in the wire.
