A Tub and a Hard Place
hellraiser711 October 2018
This is my sixth favorite episode, it's such a simple concept, but the execution that makes it work. Yeah I know an episode of "iCarly" took inspiration from this show, for the record not a fan of that show that was a show my niece watched; but this episode is still the best and is the one that does it right.

What I really like about this episode is that for once both Rob and Laura are interacting but from a distance apart. What's even more interesting is the fact that despite Laura is part of the episode she's hardly physically in it, except in scenes from the present where she is giving the rundown along with Rob, and we don't really see her till at least the final five minutes of the episode.

As Laura is trapped within the bathroom all we hear is her voice, it's interesting because we're kind of just using our imaginations as to what Laura is going though in there which makes it all the funnier as the audio is fueling our imaginations. But also, what makes this work is that in a way it's somewhat two schools of humor together from Laura's end it's the verbal but in Rob's it's visual.

It's just funny as we see both desperately trying to get the darn door open but to no avail, from what they go though I'd change hotels. Two of the stand out moments are when Rob keeps trying to ram the door but just keeps hurting himself and a few delays.

But my other favorite moment is when the idiotic Bellboy brings in an equally idiotic house Detective trying to get Rob arrested but then Rob does a smart thing to not just get out of the misunderstanding taking place but also get the door open.

I won't say how but let's just say it's both hilarious and proves both the house Detective and Bellboy are the stupidest people on the face of the Earth and Rob is the smartest.

Utterly ridiculous...and utterly for laughs.
planktonrules15 December 2023
Rob and Laura go off on a second honeymoon. Yet, when they return from a luxurious and beautiful resort, Laura is clearly not happy...and Millie keeps asking what went wrong. What follows is a flashback to the trip...and what went wrong. I'd say more about exactly what happened...but I don't want to spoil the surprise. Suffice to say, Laura spends more of the time in their lovely room stuck in the bathroom! But how and why?!

This is an episode you just need to see, and hear, to appreciate. It's kooky and funny. However, if you look at the reviews, folks either adore it or hate it...depending on whether or not you can accept the ridiculousness of the situations.

By the way, Bill Idelson appears as a bellhop, which is odd since he'd played Sally's beau, Herman, in several prior episodes. Also, Kathleen Freeman appears as a maid in the hotel...which is mildly interesting since she ran a motel in a previous episode. Bernard Fox also appears and also appeared in previous episodes...such as the one where he played a night school teacher who was infatuated with Laura.

WHY DON'T YA JUST YANK IT OUT?????
tcchelsey10 September 2023
Without too much surprise, the comedy master himself, Carl Reiner wrote this classic episode which, I am most sure, prompted lots and lots of fans to explore putting their own toes into bathtub plumbing??? I am guilty, but DID NOT get stuck.

In this case, Laura gets REALLY stuck, her big toe in the bathtub spout --and all while they are on a brief stay at a strange hotel, with some strange folks buzzing in and out of the room. This is truly creative writing that keeps on giving. It is done beautifully, and Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore work off each other so well. Also thank director Jerry Paris.

In realty, according to notes, Mary was trying to quit smoking and was not in a good mood, also not too pleased with the script --until she got herself into the role. She had fun.

Dick Van Dyke has never been more kookier here and so light on his feet, almost acrobatic. He is incredible to watch, and inspiring to all us kids at the time who couldn't sit still for two seconds.

Also doing their very best is Kathleen Freeman as the atypical sour puss, wise cracking maid and Bernard Fox (famous as Dr. Bombay on BEWITCHED), playing a Dr. Bombay-type hotel detective! See to believe.

Not to be missed, and if you are a fan of the series, an episode with a lot of fun memories. A MUST.

SEASON 4 EPSIDOE 27 remastered dvd box set.

The Art of Clean Well Written Comedy complete with Suds and Lather.

Warning: Spoilers
I was invited to a suite party at the Nassau Coliseum hosted by a local radio station. My friend and I were looking forward to an evening of endless food and drink while watching a hockey game in the comfort of a luxury box overlooking the rink below. My friend suggested we take his car for the 20 mile drive to the Arena. We left an hour before game time and all of a sudden the car stalled. We pulled over to the side popped the hood and smoke started to erupt then flames the car engine became a blaze. The evening was ruined. The Dick Van Dyke Show was a dominant sitcom of its era wining multiple Emmy awards and other honors during the Early 1960's. Writer and creator Carl Reiner modeled this story after his own experiences as a comedy writer in those early days of television. Balancing his work, deadlines and domestic responsibilities. But the producers and the networks felt that Carl could not play himself on television because he couldn't act and he was too ethnic looking. Someone like Johnny Carson could play the lead, but CBS wanted a fresh face for their new pilot so they chose the energetic lanky Dick Van Dyke. As for the Dick Van Dyke His dexterity and gentle voice made him a natural in front of the camera. Mary Tyler Moore with her soft features and sweet vulnerability made this team a natural pair. Mary Tyler Moore insisted on wearing comfortable clothing on the show so the addition was born wearing the Capri pants when cleaning the Petrie house. That was ground breaking. In this episode, Rob (Dick Van Dyke) is carrying his wife Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) through the threshold of their New Rochelle home. Next door neighbor Millie (Ann Guilbert) storms behind surprised to see Rob and Laura arriving home so early as scheduled. Rob places Laura on the coach as a curious and eager Millie wonder's what went wrong? The couple was to celebrate their long awaited second honeymoon. An evening of first class room service in a luxury suite in Manhattan followed by a Broadway show. Laura tells an inquisitive, probing Millie the story as they flashback to the earlier events. Laura decides to take a bath and Rob decides to put on makeup. The results are disastrous, but the writing is hilarious. Some notable parts of this episode showcase Mary Tyler Moore's vocal timing as for most of the sketch she is behind a locked bathroom door. Van Dyke also exhibits his special talent of physical comedy as husband Rob is trying to rescue her with a miserable outcome. Flies do get stuck in the ointment as a bumbling House detective intercedes played by Bernie Fox. As usual Detective Fox misreads the situation along with the clueless Bell Boy (Bill Idelson) in tow. Carl Reiner wrote a beautiful script. The lines weren't just so natural. I noticed while watching as to what or how i would respond. Naturally. Long time Jerry Lewis co-star Kathleen Freeman also appears as the maid. As for Bernie Fox's character, it seems to be a prelude to his offshoot/ later character Colonel Crittenton in the series Hogan's Heroes. As for my friend burning automobile luckily a good Samaritan with a fire extinguisher came along and put out the flames.

Not funny because it's too dumb to believe or enjoy...
ronnybee211215 February 2023
I didn't like this episode one bit.

Why not? Because it really isn't funny, and it isn't believable at-all.

Too many things happen that make absolutely no sense (or would never happen in real-life) in this episode.

To make matters worse, the main characters in this episode couldn't be more annoying.

Millie is in her usual mode,ie.nosy and obnoxious.

Laura does her standard whining routine which is like nails on a chalkboard.

Rob,as usual, is portrayed as weak and ineffective, for cheap laughs.

I suppose,if the viewer isn't literal-minded and if they can suspend a lot of normal and natural disbelief, this episode might be somewhat amusing.

Unfortunately, the events in this episode belong in a silly kid's cartoon, not in a sitcom that is supposed-to be real-life. Crappy episode,4/10 (or less).

Watch it yourself and decide what you think, and let us know please !

Too much to accept as real!

Had its moments but a lot of common sense had to be suspended -
  • how did Laurel shove her toe so far up the spigot ?

  • would anyone really paint on a false moustache?

  • why would Laura have a laundry marker in her purse ?

  • why have Herman, Sally's boyfriend play the bellhop character..
  • why Laura lock the bathroom door in the first place
  • why does everyone; maid, bellhop and waiter just continually walk into their room unannounced ..ridiculous!
