How could the writers be THIS stupid?!
planktonrules18 December 2023
According to IMDB, the inspiration for this episode is "The Joey Bishop Show" and how the writers disliked him and wrote terrible things in the script's margins...and then deleted them before Bishop would see them! So, even though Rob, Sally and Buddy seem incredibly stupid, there IS precedent for this!

Rob, Laura, Sally and Buddy are preparing to go to a show when they realize something awful...they accidentally gave Alan Brady the wrong script. Why is this so bad? Well, they wrote all sorts of insulting things about him in the script...their copy only...but now that Alan has it, they might all get fired. So, instead of going to the show, they are in for an evening of breaking and entering in order to replace that script.

This and the episode where Laura divulges to America that Alan is bald are two of the only episodes I can think of where Alan is NOT an awful jerk. See the show...see what I mean.

This is a highly enjoyable episode...one of the better ones of season five. Silly and very enjoyable.

Warning: Spoilers
Is it just me, or is any other Van Dyke fan annoyed when Mel reveals the name of Alan's wife, and judging by the reaction shot of the others, it leaves an impression that Rob and Buddy and Sally and Laura didn't know that fact? The idea of Mel blackmailing Alan is funny, but the scene ought to have been written differently.
