- Willis Jackson: [after Carl tells the boys no kids are allowed in the club, a white kid comes out] No kids huh?
- Arnold Jackson: What's he, a Muppet?
- Willis Jackson: I get it, it's not our age, it's our color.
- Arnold Jackson: [dryly] I bet we could get in if we rolled around in a flour bin for a little while.
- Willis Jackson: I'm sorry, Dad, but that guy, Carl, he kicked Arnold and me out of here this afternoon, that's why we weren't able to see your race.
- Arnold Jackson: That's right, he treated us like a couple of dogs that made a puddle on the floor.
- Arnold Jackson: Yesterday Dad ran a practice race and came in 3rd.
- Adelaide Brubaker: How many runners were there?
- Arnold Jackson: 3.
- Adelaide Brubaker: I ran in a race with 2 other people once, I came in 4th.
- Philip Drummond: The guys at my club call me L and M now.
- Willis Jackson: L and M?
- Philip Drummond: Yeah: lean and mean!
- Philip Drummond: I've improved my score from last year on my chinups, sit ups, and pushups.
- Arnold Jackson: That's great, because you've got a lot more to push up.
- Willis Jackson: You look great, Dad.
- Philip Drummond: Yes, you can see I've lost all my old flab.
- Willis Jackson: That's right.
- [pats Phil's stomach]
- Willis Jackson: Any flab you see here is new flab.
