Silly, but amusing enough

Along with the premiere episode and various moments relating to Rika, this spotlight moment for Calumon is another example of innocuously introducing things that will become important later. Being a very talky episode, it had a lot of potential for boredom, but works considerably better than the previous one thanks to some effective humor. I especially liked the speculations from the students in the beginning (…it was a ghost dinosaur) and the imaginary sequence of the boxing match with the announcer's alliteration. As far as character stuff goes, here's the gist of it: the scenes with Calumon and Guilmon are effective and charming, but the ones with Takato and Henry are stale. It emphasizes more than before that the digimon themselves have far more colorful personalities than their human counterparts. Furthermore, it also demonstrates that the friendship between Takato and Henry feigns substance from their spending so much time together, which won't change later. Henry occasionally clarifies details for Takato, but these two never grow together so much as simply share the same experiences; it's completely mechanical. The fight with Vilemon is arbitrary and pretty pointless, though there's a nice moment when Rika notices Calumon at her feet, establishing that Rika, for some odd reason, is the kid that he is most drawn to. This is a reasonably fun episode, but loses points for devoting too much time to the inconsequential matter of finding Calumon a human partner, which could have easily been balanced with introductions to other characters (like Yamaki and Impmon).
