Thrilling and memorable, but kind of intrusive

This episode is possibly the biggest example of fulfilling audience wishes, as it brings back both versions of WarGreymon and pits them against each other! However, in spite of containing numerous good things, there's an overwhelming sense of untapped potential.

The main issue is that the story feels pretty unsubstantial, as BlackWarGreymon's return, though interesting, seems to intrude on the dark spores matter. The first half has its share of interesting moments, as the infected kids display unsettling behavior as the spores begin to take effect. What remains is pretty much two intercut action sequences, one of which involves chasing the car with the 3 villains. It's overall a pretty ambitious sequence, with the digimons' attacks fired frequently, and a good display of WarGreymon and BlackWarGreymon's abilities (who knew WarGreymon could use the shield on his back like that?). I also thought it was cool how the other kids worked to clear the area to prevent harm to bystanders. WarGreymon is a great battle form, but his battles in the first series were too short and often lacked excitement. This is possibly his best one so far, and leads to a terrific final shot and a pep talk that works better than it should because the rookie digimon use examples from their own lives to make their claims.

Though BlackWarGreymon, I believe, is one of the better characters of "Digimon 02", his re-introduction has been done a little too late into the proceedings. Would it not have been interesting to see him travel to the World of Darkness or have his rivalry with WarGreymon truly expanded upon? While the conclusion to his story works, it could have been better incorporated into this final act. However, it's still great to see him again, a commanding presence as always. His judgments regarding Oikawa are pretty severe and will contribute to the next episode.

Other things worth noting include further revelations on the relationship between the 3 villains and T.K.'s mom providing information on the infected children; involving the parents like that is always welcome. In terms of quality, this one deserves a score of 8, but the rather unnatural melding of these two subplots leaves me convinced that they would have worked much better individually.
