The Salzburg Connection
ShadeGrenade5 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Duncan and Stuart-Clark are miserable because there are no good-looking women aboard the M.S. Begonia ( apart from Nurse Wynton, and she doesn't fancy either of them ). They brighten up when they catch sight of a glamorous new passenger - Anna-Marie from Salzburg.

The doctors compete to see who can chat her up first. Duncan has the advantage because he has senior rank, and is able to keep Dick busy by giving him lots of work, as well as making him enter a talent contest by doing ( bad ) impressions of farmyard animals.

Duncan urges Anna-Marie to enter the 'Miss M.S. Begonia' beauty contest, which she goes on to win. Thinking he is home and dry, he goes to her cabin but has a surprise in store...

One-time 'Miss World' Eva Reuber-Staier guests in this George Layton and Jonathan Lynn-scripted episode, and very beautiful she is too. James Bond fans may remember as 'Rublevitch' from three of the Roger Moore films.

The plot is virtually a remake of 'Men Without Women' from the last season of 'In Charge'. In that the doctors were competing for the favours of a sexy nurse ( Carol Cleveland ). The beauty contest idea may or may not have been inspired by the episode 'The Garden Fate'. A pity we do not get to see Dick making a chump out of himself at the talent contest, it would have gone some way to livening this up. The Purser's name is given as 'Harold Smethwick', incidentally. Duncan and Stuart-Clark at loggerheads provides some amusement; we even see Dick writing a letter to the B.M.A. suggesting that his friend should be struck off on account of unethical behaviour. Of course he does not get to send it because there's a twist ending coming.

Funniest moment - over the closing credits, we see the smarmy Purser trying to inveigle his way into Anna-Marie's cabin, only to be forcefully rebuffed.
