The Showdown with Charles Herbert
wes-connors27 June 2009
Charles Herbert (as David Barker), still in a military school for young boys, lies about being bitten by a dog, so the boy who bit him doesn't get in trouble. Since the school's doctor is out of town, young Herbert is sent to receive treatment from Alex (Carl Betz). Back at the Stones, Herbert gets a tetanus shot, and decides he'll stay overnight to attend a Saturday baseball game with Jeff (Paul Peterson). Mary (Shelley Fabares) has a date with Herbie, and the Stones are going to the Hales' for the evening.

This leaves Jeff and Herbert home alone. Of course, they stay up past bedtime, eat the cake Donna (Donna Reed) baked for the weekend, and watch an adult crime drama called "The Showdown". Herbert, suffering from his usual guilty conscience, has a nightmare confusing television with real life (a cleverly done spoof). Meanwhile, Donna and Alex must decide how to punish the boys...

Herbert's "David" is always a welcome guest star. As always, he performs exceptionally, and displays an obvious rapport with Peterson. The scene with the lads getting ready for bed may have had the ABC censors giving this episode a second look. This was Herbert's third "Donna Reed Show" appearance; also note, he and Peterson played Cary Grant's sons in the movie "Houseboat" (1958).
