Review - The Big Light Aired 3-26-53
The Big Light references the sound stage light fixture, weighing around 150 pounds, dropped from a height that killed the Director of movie being produced. Friday, Smith are working the day-watch out of Homicide Division, and are called to check on the director's accident. They interview three key individuals, i.e. production supervisor, first assistant director, lighting worker and best boy. The best boy and the lighting worker agree the accident was not an accident, the light was dropped on purpose, acting as the murder weapon. The lighting worker was friends with the deceased director, doubt he was the killer, no motive. The first-assistant director is passed off as the likely killer based on arguments he had with the director at an ongoing basis and the production supervisor blamed him for killing the director. A note passed from one person to the next is key helping solve the crime. The note is uncovered toward the end in the hands of the killer. The note read for the director to appear in private under the light fixture in order to have a meeting with the killer. At which time, the light fixture would drop from above a catwalk onto the man, killing him. The crime lab found evidence material from gray-flannel slacks found on the lamp that killed the victim, the same material a suspect was wearing that morning. With the note in his pocket and the material torn form his slacks, Friday, Smith have their murderer. It is simply a matter of him coming down from the catwalk to face his accusers, after he admitted to the crime. Friday tells Smith, he wants to be a director, let him figure out the ending, we can wait.
The episode is a winner based on the story, its ending and Herb Vigran is a good guy in it.
