- Martin Tupper is on top of the world. He has just finished editing a best selling book. His girlfriend,Tasha, visits him at the office just before closing hours. A happy Martin clears his desk and throws her on top of it only to have wild sex in which Martin dominates her.
The next day Martin visits Gibbys office. Gibby congratulates him on the book but due to major economic struggles in the book selling business, he has to cut Martins salary by 7%. Martin becomes upset and tells him about the book. Gibby responds by telling Martin that is the reason why he is not being let go. Martin quits Whitestone publishing.
Toby is sad as Martin leaves. Martin tells her that when he finds a job he will send for her. He proceeds to steal office supplies before leaving.
Martin has an interview with an old friend in the publishing business. They catch up and get along really well, and Martin feels he is about to get the job, but is unable to because the company his friend works for is laying a lot of their workers off including himself. His friend then inquires about Martin's old job at Whitestone. Martin then begins to interview for other publishing companies including a cooking book company and a text book company.
Eventually he goes back to Gibby and asks for his old job at tries to negotiate only a 4% pay cut. However, Gibby informs Martin that the salary is now lowered by 12%. Martin turns down the offer and tells Gibby to screw himself. Meanwhile Toby is having a conniption about having to work for another editor.
Martin meets with Eddie and helps him prepare for a party. Eddie asks him about financial assets, Martin responds by telling Eddie that he does not have any. At the party he runs into a bankruptcy lawyer who is doing very well, she finds out that he is Eddie's friend who got laid off. At the party he continually runs into conversations that center around work, money, and jobs. Tasha joins the party and during the night Martin begins to tell people a variety of answers when asked about what he does for work. Eventually he tells people that he is unemployed, which makes him feel like a shrinking man.
Judith visits Martin at his apartment, and encourages him to branch outside of publishing. He pretends to listen.
Martin's physical appearance, hygiene, and overall state of mind begins to lessen as he becomes more isolated. Tasha visits Martin and tells him that in relationships you expect to be there for someone through the tough times. Sadly, Tasha states that they are only dating and then dumps Martin.
Judith, Eddie, and Toby visit Martin to take him out for dinner. They tell him not to define himself by his career, or what he does, rather by who he is and the people who are around that love him. Martin tells them that it is not enough, not by a long shot. Then he goes on a rant and tells all of them that he would trade them all in for a job.
Martin goes back to Gibby to negotiate a 15% job pay cut from his original salary. Gibby accepts. Toby is happy he has returned and Martin finds joy at being back.
