A reference is made to "Harmsworth's elevation to the peerage." Alfred Harmsworth was a newspaper tycoon who owned the Daily Mail and the Daily Mirror. He was an early proponent of tabloid journalism. He was elevated to the peerage in 1905 as Baron Northcliffe (and later Viscount Northcliffe).
Mention is made of Jenkins whistling "Here Comes the Galloping Major." It was a popular song written by Fred W. Leigh and George Bastow, and first performed in 1906.
