Kovac and Benton rush to the scene of a school shooting, soon bickering over who is the most critical patient, deserving helicopter evacuation: the shooter or one of his victims. Kovac chooses the boy, probably less urgent, rendering Benton's furious as the murderer bled to death on route to the hospital. Benton and Corday later pull off simultaneous double surgery to save the boy, who kept begging for his father to be called . Carter is performing brilliantly and over-eagerly, though absentminded, even insists to go on after a patient accidentally reflex-kicks him to the floor, hurting his stabbing-recovering back. Abby reports to Mark having seen Carter inject stolen narcotics into his wrist while cleaning up after a trauma. His denied addiction is a concern for the staff, but potentially also their patients. Greene, Weaver, Anspaugh, Benton and Chen stage an intervention to demand Carter to enter special doctors rehab in Atlanta, which he refuses, preferring to resign, but after a violent outburst cries in Peter's arms and they take the flight. Kovac is left enraged and nearly crosses a red line when he can't prove a young pregnant woman stabbed herself to get rid of an unwanted pregnancy, so attempts to overrule by psychiatrist or court order her refusal to save the baby boy's life by accepting a Cesarean.
