An American Olympic Hero
Who is the first American woman to win five gold medals in the Olympics? The answer: speed skater Bonnie Blair.
Bonnie Blair was true American Olympic hero, a "David" beating "Goliaths," the latter being the much-bigger and strong East German women. These women, alleged steroid users, were unbeatable for years in the sport until little (5 feet, 4 inches, 133-pounds) Bonnie came along and beat them in the late 1980s. She went on to win five gold medals over several Olympics. She was a hero, too, to many European women skater who also felt they could never beat the big German girls.
Blair's history, and her incredible family support from Champaign, Illinois, is really inspiring and might draw a tear or two from you as you watch this SportsCentury episode.
Blair embodied hard work, wholesomeness, a great desire to win and a winning personality. A skater since she was two, her story is pretty cool. Have we had a female Winter Olympics star like her in the last 20 years? Maybe we'll see one in a couple of weeks in the upcoming Games in Vancouver!
