A Complex, Very Interesting 'Big Teddy Bear'
Tom Jackson, ESPN analyst and former great linebacker for the Denver Broncos, said the following (paraphrasing it): "If Reggie White had been a mean person, someone like Joe Greene, he would have been......dangerous." The meaning was that nice-guy-preacher White was already a force, the best in the game and an unstoppable defensive end. What damage could he have inflicted if he had been nasty with intent to hurt? It's a scary thought. Reggie White was that good.
Fortunately, Reggie was a like a big teddy bear most of the time. He also was a deeply spiritual man, hence the nickname "Minister Of Defense." This program chronicles White's football career and private life and gives a mixture of opinions of the man. When it's all over, you're not quite sure how to view White because it one hour you get a lot of facts and viewpoints of a man who turned out to be quite controversial. His complex personality and willingness to speak frankly make this an interesting SportsCentury episode.
Two things are indisputable: he was a great defensive lineman; he died way too you (43. years of age, of a rare disease.) The latter, of course, overshadows everything else. Wow, what a shame. He was such an interesting man.
