In baseball, a "pinch hitter" refers to a player who is brought into the game to hit at any time after the opening pitch, substituting for a player who has already appeared in the game. Pinch hitters are used when a player is injured mid-game and cannot hit, or when the pinch hitter has a better record against the current pitcher. The player for whom the pinch hitter substitutes is excluded from the rest of that game.
