The booklets full of stamps that Chet is working with are Blue Chip Stamps, a staple in many households until the late 1980s. They, along with S&H Green Stamps and several other regional outlets, were issued at grocery stores, gas stations, and pharmacies, as part a customer loyalty program. To redeem the stamps, customers would take them and apply them inside booklets, then take the filled booklets to redemption centers for merchandise, such as barbecue grills, small kitchen appliances, patio furniture, and the like. As the stamps were issued either individually, in strips, or in page-sized sheets, applying them to the booklets tended to be a time-consuming process. The stamp program was replaced with more efficient loyalty club cards by the mid-1990s.
