- Raymond questions Debra about the budget and says he can do a better job - so she lets him try. In a few weeks, Ray bounces checks and has $300 in overdraft fees. He creates a fake checkbook so it all looks good on paper.
- When Debra realizes that Ray doesn't appreciate her taking care of all the finances, she hands the job over to him. Weeks later, while at Nemo's Pizza, Andy tells Ray everything he's done wrong in the checkbook. And because the check bounced, the electric company is shutting off power to the Barones house. So Ray asks Robert for some money. Since Debra is on her way to the bank, Ray rushes to the ATM to put the money in the account before Debra notices the problems.
- When Ray is unappreciative of Debra's efforts to maintain a proper checkbook and plan a budget, she asks him to take care of it. Ray wants a subscription of Sports Illustrated, but Debra says that is a waste of money since Ray gets a copy of the magazine to read at work. Ray says that he wants just one thing, while Debra says that he has to learn to live within a budget. Debra explains that Ray gets a paycheck every 2 weeks. She pays all the fixed costs, then services the debt, and then puts something aside for the kid's college fund. Ray says that Debra is making it sound too complicated and that she should stick to paying the bills. Debra is livid at the suggestion and hands over all the accounts to Ray to manage.
He ends up bouncing some important checks (Ray bounced 14 checks in all) & is charged $300 in penalties since he didn't reconcile the checkbook. One of the checks that bounced was to pay the electricity bill, and so the electricity company has decided to cut off power. Plus, Ray is $3000 overdrawn at his bank. Ray never reconciled the checkbook and never kept track of the money he was putting in and the bills that he was paying. Ray also paid his Visa card in full to avoid interest, but that meant no money left over for essentials and that led to the bounced checks and the overdrawn account. Ray's friend Andy says that Ray has to put $3000 in the account to fix the problem and he would have to come clean to Debra.
He tries to borrow money from Robert & has to put $3000 in the bank immediately to meet expenses and pay pending bills. Ray lies to Robert that Debra has spending issues. Robert was suspecting Ray of having gambling issues or having a mistress or having gotten a girl pregnant. Robert believes that Debra is having issues in containing her credit card spending and is a compulsive shopper. Robert agrees to help Ray.
Ray tries to hide his mistakes with a fake checkbook. Debra is happy that Ray was able to manage the finances so well. Debra feels guilty that she always made a big fuss about balancing the checkbook and Ray did that with ease and without making any complaints.
But then Marie and Frank find out that Robert is lending Ray money. Marie and Frank also know about Debra's spending problem that they learned from Robert. Robert asked Marie and Frank to deliver the $3000 check to Ray. Ray tells them that Debra has spending issues. Debra comes by and asks cash from Ray. Ray and his parents refuse to give Debra any money. Debra takes a check from Ray.
So now Ray is trying to put money in bank before Debra realizes the situation, and he is caught by the police when he tries to manhandle an ATM machine. Debra was already at the cash counter when Ray reaches the bank. He tries to withdraw money from the ATM, by pushing a customer out the way. The old lady brings a cop to complain about Ray, who turns out to be Robert. Meanwhile the ATM machine won't give any money to Ray since his debit card won't work. Eventually, the card doesn't work, and the machine is shut down. Debra sees Ray from inside the bank. Debra then takes over the house finance again. Meanwhile Frank and Marie don't know, and they cut up Debra's credit card.
