- When Ray gives his parents an engraved toaster for Christmas, they exchange it right away without even opening it.
- It's Christmas time, and Ray has the idea of giving engraved toasters to everyone. Being the pessimist he is, Ray is worried that everyone will think it's a dumb idea. But when Debra's parents, Warren and Lois, loved the gift, Ray began to feel better about himself. Later, Ray finds out that Frank and Marie exchanged their toaster for a coffeemaker.
- Ray finally gets a Christmas gift (an engraved toaster) he thinks Lois/Warren (Robert Culp) and Frank/Marie, and all their friends will love. But Ray keeps obsessing that maybe the gift is not perfect, as he thinks of Lois and Warren as the hip people. He didn't spell Christmas and got it engraved as X-Mas and is worried that people will not like that. Ray has been obsessing over the toaster for 2 months and Debra is sick of it. Debra wants to wrap the present in a foil, but Ray is against that as that might give the gift away. He wants to watch the reaction when they open the present. Then Ray is worried about the size of his nose.
Lois and Warren are the first ones to receive the toaster and they are clearly underwhelmed. Debra asks them to open the box to read the engraving. Lois & Warren love the gift. Warren loves the chrome and Lois loves the engraving. Lois ends up kidding Ray on the forehead. Ray feels they are making fun of him.
Robert comes with his friend Leann (Drenda Spohnholtz). Robert loves the toaster as well and hugs Ray. Ray is still skeptical and wonders why Marie and Frank did not call him about the toaster yet. Everyone, including friends such as Gale, Andy (Andy Kindler) and Linda (Maggie Wheeler) love the toaster and leave messages on Ray's answering machine thanking him for it. Frank and Marie haven't even stopped by Ray's house for 2 days now. Ray knows that they are mad since Ray and Debra spent Christmas at Debra's parents house this year.
2 days after Christmas, Ray discovers that Frank and Marie have returned the toaster (and exchanged it for a coffeemaker) without even looking at it as they didn't figure out that the toaster was engraved. Ray feels bad and calls his parents a couple of psychopaths. Marie suggests engraving the coffee machine with the same message. Ray says that his gift had a meaning and that everyone else loved his toaster. Turns out Marie and Frank never liked any of Ray's gifts. He got them a microwave, a Fruit of the Month club, and they never appreciated it. They also never thought of how Ray might feel about any of it. Marie says that they are the ones who have to get the presents. Ray is livid that his parents don't care about his feelings.
Marie then tries to get back the toaster Ray gave them, with disastrous results. Frank wanted to spin it off with the store so that they end up getting both the toaster and the coffee machine, but Marie tells the truth and says she wants to exchange the coffee machine for a toaster. Then they open all the toaster boxes, meanwhile Frank finds 1000's more in the storage area of the store. Marie finds another old woman bring in a toaster, gifted by her son, with the wrong engraving on it. It is Ray's toaster. Marie yanks the toaster out of her hands and runs away. They are arrested by Bloomingdales and Ray is happy that they care.
