- When Frank starts showing a keen interest in Ray's work, walking around in a cheery mood and not being his usual grumpy self, everyone questions the radical change in behavior. - Frank realizes that in his job Ray has access to a lot of baseball players and their inner secrets. Ray was back from work one evening and gossiping about how one ball player Joe Taggart's wife was cheating on him, but this kind of stuff doesn't always make it way to the papers.
Ray talks to Frank about how he spent time with a baseball player named Ken Griffey Jr. in the locker room and how he fixed his swing by seeking help from his dad. The sudden generosity and affection create a lot of suspicion. Debra and Ray spend all night talking about what this means. Even Marie agrees that Frank has been much nicer lately. Debra thinks Frank is realizing that he is getting old, and this is his way of connecting with Ray in his last days.
The truth eventually comes out. Frank is out for a shave, when his buddies Stan (Victor Raider-Wexler) and Garvin (Len Lesser) come by to hand over an envelope of money that they lost to Frank in sports bets. Stan and Garvin cannot believe the hot streak that Frank has been having. Frank knew that Joe Taggart was off his game. Then Frank bets on Seattle over the Yanks and Griffey breaks out of his slump and wins the game for Seattle.
Ray goes to meet Frank at the salon where Sal (John Del Rengo) was giving him a shave. Frank had been going to Sal for 15 years and yet Sal never knew Franks' last name, the fact that he had 2 boys and that one of them was Ray Barone, the sportswriter. Frank had been using Ray's tips to bet against his buddies and win. Stan believes that Frank is a witch who made a pact with the devil.
Ray is disappointed and sets up Frank to teach him a lesson. He gives Frank wrong information about a hockey match that evening. Ray says that the goalie for the Avalanche team is out due to a knee problem. Meanwhile, Marie believes that Frank is fooling around on her.
Frank is livid to find out that Ray gave him wrong information. Ray admits that he gave the wrong information to Frank deliberately. Frank had bet big and is angry at Ray for setting him up. Franks says that he is family, and one is never supposed to go against the family.
Frank wins by accident when the team he bet on wins in extra time. Frank gloats that even the Gods did not support Ray when he went against his father. He tries to entice Ray by offering to split the winnings with him which amount to $15,000. Ray won't budge and Frank decides to genuinely spend time with Ray to show him that he enjoyed their time together. Frank says that if Ray was more practical, he would simply ask his opinion about the games and then they could bet and win together. But when Ray wont budge, Frank promises that he wont bet on games anymore.
