- Natalie Green: Jo, if you don't get this scholarship you'll be right back in the Bronx running around with the Little Pueblos.
- Jo Polniaczek: Young Diablos!
- Natalie Green: Whatever. Is that what you want?
- Jo Polniaczek: No, I want to finish what I started! I got plans, ideas, I got a frog I haven't dissected yet.
- Jo Polniaczek: Well you got me mad!
- Blair Warner: So what else is new? You always make me mad. You make me furious.
- Jo Polniaczek: Then why did you do this for me?
- Blair Warner: Because I didn't want you to go. I can admit we're friends even if you can't.
- Blair Warner: That's what friendship is, Jo. I do something for you...
- Jo Polniaczek: And I do something for you.
- Blair Warner: No. I do something for you, and you let me do it.
- Jo Polniaczek: But then I owe you, right?
- Blair Warner: You owe the gas company. You owe Bloomingdale's. You don't owe your friends.
- Jo Polniaczek: I was thinking of trying something new with my hair.
- Blair Warner: You mean like washing it?
- Natalie Green: [looking over prospective scholarships Jo could apply for] The Sven Erickson Foundation. To be awarded to a student of Norweigan ancestry whose father is a member of the plumber's union.
- Jo Polniaczek: I don't think I qualify.
- Edna Garrett: Ah. The Judith Gehart scholarship. To be awarded to any young woman who promises to live chastely and give up sins of the flesh.
- Jo Polniaczek: I don't think I wanna qualify.
- Natalie Green: Tootie, the Warner Textile company will fund Jo's scholarship, all she has to do is be nice to Blair.
- Dorothy 'Tootie' Ramsey: Is that fair?
- Natalie Green: What?
- Dorothy 'Tootie' Ramsey: Is it fair to use pull to get Jo the scholarship? Isn't that favoritism?
- Natalie Green: Look, Tootie, this whole situation is confusing enough without bringing morality into it.
- Dorothy 'Tootie' Ramsey: Come on, Jo, think. Maybe you've got some money tucked away somewhere that you forgot about.
- Jo Polniaczek: Tootie, I already un-tucked everything I had long ago!
- Jo Polniaczek: [after finding out Blair secretly sent in her scholarship application, which she got] Blair. You just couldn't keep your hands off my life, could you? I told you I didn't want your crummy scholarship!
- Edna Garrett: It's the same crummy scholarship you were thrilled about a minute ago.
- Jo Polniaczek: This is different.
- Edna Garrett: How?
- Blair Warner: Yeah, how?
- Jo Polniaczek: Cause she's gonna hold this over me for the rest of my life.
- Blair Warner: I didn't do anything you couldn't have done yourself. And you don't owe me anything except three dollars and thirty-three cents.
- Blair Warner: [after Jo gives a confused face] I sent your application registered mail.
- [first lines]
- Jo Polniaczek: [Blair's keeping a distance between her and the washing-up] Are you allergic to Teflon or what?
- Blair Warner: I'm trying not to get anything on my outfit. This is a Giovanni De Marco.
- Jo Polniaczek: Too late! Giovanni's already got some maple syrup on his sleeve.
- Blair Warner: [to Jo] I could have done something really wonderful for you.
- Jo Polniaczek: Aw, go do it for a giraffe!
