Chase's successful but tyrannical Aunt Angela (Jane Wyman) goes on a business trip to Rome. Cole (William Moses) is enticed to go along with her to do a little sightseeing and connecting with the family tree in the real Tuscany.
Lance (Lorenzo Lamas) thinks Angela actually wants Cole there to remind him that she likes Cole and has entertained making him the heir to the family empire if Lance doesn't reach his potential peak of maturity. She also wants to see what Lance does on his own which might not be wise.
Chase (Robert Foxworth) is suspicious of her motives too but Angela, a complex character who values family and legacy does seem to have a genuine rapport with his great aunt and we see a more human, vulnerable side of her on the trip. If one happens to be in a family business with a long, rich history what Angela is doing pitting Cole against Lance and watching where it goes might very well seem like common sense and I wouldn't disagree. But leaving Lance in charge alone? Lance is left back occupying his grandmother Angela's seat at Falcon Crest (The name of which refers to their winery, vineyards and palacial mansion from which they conduct much of their business) to deal with Jack Sloan (James Sloyan), an oily merchant who wants to put the hallowed label of Falcon Crest on some cheap wine inflating the value for sale to people who might not know the difference. Lance refuses outright but continues talking to Sloan.
While Angela is away Lance may not do the right thing and he doesn't much listen to his oenologist mother Julia (Abby Dalton) or his outraged Uncle Chase who has a partial stake (his Zinfandel grapes) in one of the wines Falcon Crest is bottling.
After Falcon Crest's Cabernet Sauvignon wins a gold medal at a competition in Rome the company reputation is greater than it has ever been. But that could be short-lived if Lance's scheme with Sloan goes the wrong way.
Chase chooses to help Lance claiming he has a stake in Falcon Crest. Technically he doesn't unless you once again take in to account what this series tried to say about family.
Chase's small independent vineyard is no competition for Falcon Crest. Indeed they actually do annual business together as Falcon Crest buys Chase's grapes. But the subtle hint is that Chase views Falcon Crest as part of his legacy too as it was started by his grandfather and he looks forward to a resolution to his conflicts with Angela and perhaps a day when they will all run Falcon Crest together.
