not as strong as others

Let me mention that I did enjoy this segment of Fantasy Island, and even though both stories were decent enough, the endings were rather pedestrian. There were some notable faces such as the late Dack Rambo(sadly passed away from AIDS), Lisa Hartman, who's being chased by Rambo's character, Peter(he looks like her older brother), Ed Begley Jr., and the entertaining Harry Guardino. Rambo is actually a wealthy prince, but his fantasy is to be a working man(why?), and he lands a job on a fishing boat, and his friendship with Jamie(Begley Jr.)was actually quite nice, as Jamie tried to teach Peter the ropes. I don't think I can say the same for the relationship between Peter and Chris(Hartman), which seemed forced, and she is much younger than him; after splitting up after dinner because of differences, they leave the island as a couple. She looks very young here, and I had trouble seeing them have a serious relationship, and he threw so many tired and old lines at her, I'm surprised she fell for them.

Regarding the other segment, Guardino(Burke)is in fine form as a detective looking for the murder of his partner, and his fantasy is to go to the old west and bring law and order, as Mr. Roarke informs him that is the most requested fantasy. It boils down to him looking for the Larson brothers, whom he thinks killed his partner, and now they're in his "new" town; he portrays a Marshal willing to protect folks living without any law. The bottom line is that he ends up arresting them, but they were innocent of his partner's murder, and with the help of Julie(Sheree North), he sees the light, and they leave the island together.

Overall, I thought the latter story had a bit more bite to it, although I enjoyed most of the performances, and there's a funny scene with Tattoo disco dancing that I forget to mention earlier.

Show still finding its way

Warning: Spoilers
I loved this show as a kid but it's impossible to watch this particular episode without a 21st century viewpoint. Usually I'm able to do this with old shows with no problem but I just can't here. I'm sure some readers won't like my opinion.

First there's a NY cop who alleges 2 men killed his partner. He says they got off on a technicality. No mention that, if true, that means he or another cop screwed up somewhere. So his plan is to track them down and execute them old west style. Obviously the NYPD hasn't changed in 50 years.

Then there's Prince Peter who wants to be a regular guy - no motivation is given for this. He meets a woman for all of a minute, becomes obsessed with her and begins stalking her. This is supposed to be romantic because he's rich. She's looking to marry any warm body, as long as he's loaded. She repeatedly tells him to leave her alone but he ignores her. The very first time she rejects him, he throws a massive tantrum, like all rich, entitled jerks.

Then the show just ends seemingly only halfway thru each story. At first thought I should rewind because I must have missed a whole act but I didn't. Mr Roarke can only a give a half-hearted wrap up to each story as they get on the plane. Both tales feel shockingly incomplete. It's as if the writers hadn't yet figured out yet how to tell a complete story in the time allowed. I think even by the end of this first season, this never would have happened. Later on, the writers likely even would have found time for Tattoo to play around with his own old west dreams or something. This may be one of the least satisfying episodes of the series. About the only highlight was when the cop jokingly asks if the old west town is full of robots "like in that movie." It's so rare for seventies shows to get meta like that.

Oh and Mr Roarke tells Tattoo how happy Lisa Harman's character will be in the end because she'll get to be like Princess Grace - who viewers now know will be dead in a few years and then the world will hear all about her messed up family life. So, that didn't age well.
