Ted cuts the mustard as Mrs Doyle meets Marilyn Monroe in a milky love affair

I watch this episode (quite often) with huge joy, it is one of the funniest episodes of Father Ted, and one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

For starters you wonder why Mrs Doyle is glammed up, and then you see why, Pat Mustard, then hairy, charismatic new Milk man. Mrs Doyle is using milk where possible in order to get him to the Paroquial House, and Father Jack has a new pet brick, everything is normal. Until, a baby contest puts Pat in the frame several times for fathering several hairy babies. Ted gets Mustard fired, while Dougal takes up the milk round, but Mustard has left something on the float, a bomb......

There are laughs throughout this episode from start to finish, for me it's always Jack that has me in fits, and he doesn't let me down, his pet brick is hilarious as is Mrs Doyle's insane laughing. Dougal's milk round, and the mass is insane.

A more interesting take on the movie Speed, as Ted and co do it Craggy Island style.

Total and utter comedy brilliance. This episode is perfect from start to finish. 10/10

Good God! It's feckin hilarious!

Someone was surely a genius to create and write Father Ted.

This episode takes the cake!

It's silly and it's fabulous!

Thank God for shows like this and Mrs. Brown's Boys to keep us afloat on the turbulent seas of life.

Even my dogs were rolling with laughter.

My horse out in the pasture heard us all wailing and started to whinny-laugh.

My chickens cackled until the sun went down and then they even cackled in their sleep.

I'm pretty sure I heard a flying squirrel outside screaming with laughter as he jumped tree to tree.

My cat, however, was not amused but he was born without a personality so there's that.

Speed 3 is the most highly rated Father Ted episode on IMDb and it's easy to see why. From start to finish, there's regular laughs as well as, arguably, the most famous, one-off character of all three series in the form of Pat Mustard.

Easily one of the best episodes of the entire run, it includes all the usual ingredients you'd expect from Father Ted and a little bit extra. The scenes, both outside and inside, where the priests are trying to save Dougal from the exploding milk cart are just pure comedy perfection and some of my personal Ted favourites.

The writers have rarely allowed Ted and Dougal to play second fiddle to another character but Pat Mustard dominates here, even when he's not on screen. I would even say that he's one of the most unforgettable characters on TV, not just in Father Ted. A totally over the top character, bigger than life, and yet he inhabits the screen without ever appearing to be out of place.

How the writers come up with these ideas and then weave them magically together so that 'a brick' can play such a vital role in Speed 3 is just beyond me. To have the temerity to link an episode of a series about three priests and their housekeeper with a large Hollywood blockbuster of a few years before takes some balls and could have badly backfired, but somehow, in the crazy world of Father Ted, it works sublimely. Perhaps the boldness of the writers is a big part of why they became so successful and maybe aspiring writers should take a leaf out of their book.

Whatever you do, even if you don't watch any other episode of this show, please watch this one.
