FOLLOW THE SUN – Journey into Darkness – 1961
This is episode 4 from the 1961-62 series, FOLLOW THE SUN. The series, which ran for 30 episodes, follows a trio of free-lance magazine writers. The three are played by Barry Coe, Gary Lockwood and Brett Halsey. The gimmick here is that they are based in Honolulu. Also with recurring roles are Gigi Perreau as their secretary and Jay Lanin as their contact with the Police. Of course the three newsmen are always getting involved with the usual assortment of nasty types.
Newsman Barry Coe is in Honolulu doing a magazine story on multi-millionaire heiress, Diane Baker. Baker had been shot and wounded in what was at first thought to be a robbery. Police check out the scene of the shooting and decide that Baker must have known her attacker. Baker denies this and the Police investigation goes nowhere.
Police Lt Jay Lanin asks his buddy, writer Barry Coe if he can dig up something. Coe makes some "friendly" moves on Baker after she is released from the hospital. The two are soon hitting the night spots together. Coe of course does not mention to Baker he is a writer.
While the two are out on a date, several shots are fired at them wounding a waiter. The Police again gobble up Baker for some questions. Again Baker denies knowing any reason why anyone would shoot at her. The Police tell her that the waiter has died and it is all because she refused to talk the first time. Baker breaks down and tells the Police about, David Brandon.
Brandon it seems is Baker's first husband. Brandon would go into fits of jealous rage if a man so much as looked at her. Baker had hit the road after being on the wrong end of a few beatings. She never divorced the swine. She had then met and fallen in love with a millionaire. They had married and had been happy till the hubby was killed in a car crash. Brandon has been blackmailing her for gobs of cash etc.
Brandon is locked away for a goodly spell on Baker's testimony. She does however lose all her money back to her dead husband's family. Bigamy is not something the court looked kindly on.
Not the best episode of the series that I've seen, but it still passed the time well enough.
