FOLLOW THE SUN – The Hunters – 1961
This is episode 9 from the 1961-62 series, FOLLOW THE SUN. The series, which ran for 30 episodes, follows a trio of free-lance magazine writers. The three are played by Barry Coe, Gary Lockwood and Brett Halsey. The gimmick here is that they are based in Honolulu. Also with recurring roles are Gigi Perreau as their secretary, and Jay Lanin as their contact with the local Police. Of course the three newsmen are always getting involved with the usual assortment of nasty types.
Newsman Barry Coe is in East Africa doing a story on the Ivory trade. He runs into fellow American Skip Homeier in the bar and they tip a few. Homeier asks Coe to come along for a week-long safari into the interior. They can film wildlife and maybe bag a prize trophy. Coe agrees as he might be able to write it up as a magazine story he could sell.
The next day, Coe, Homeier, the guide, Mark Miller and another American couple, Lee Philips and Susan Harrison head off. A couple of days later, while all are out looking at some game, Coe is shot and wounded. The wound turns out to not so bad and Coe is soon back on his feet. It is assumed that Coe had been shot by some poachers operating in the area.
This of course is not what happened. It turns out Homeier is a con man on the run from the mob. He had bilked the mob out of a cool quarter million and there is a contract out on him. Homeier had invited Coe along because he needed a patsy. Homeier planned on killing Coe and then planting evidence on him to suggest he was Homeier. He figured this would throw the mob off his trail.
Unfortunately for Homeier, the mob is closer than he thinks. Lee Philips is really your "less than friendly" mob hit-man. He puts several rounds into Homeier. Homeier still manages to escape and drives off in one of the camp trucks. The wounds however prove to be fatal and Homeier does not get far. Philips is tackled by Coe and the guide Miller and held for the local Constabulary.
Look close and you will see Ivan Dixon of Hogan's Heroes in an early role as one of the guides.
